Long Car Trips With Dogs

There are many times when we like to take our dogs along with us when we travel. It saves the expense and anxiety associated with boarding your pet. Many hotels are “pet-friendly” and will do their best to help your pet’s stay be comfortable. The following are some tips to make your travel time a fun time.

– Keep a collar with necessary identification on your dog at all times. Keep the leash handy as well.

– To make the experience a positive one, plan ahead and take your dog for frequent car rides that end up in a positive place, such as the dog park. It is especially helpful if your dog’s only car rides are associated with disliked places such as the vets or dog groomers.

– Plan rest stops every 2 hours for stretch breaks, walks to use up pent energy, drinks of water and to allow your pet to relieve himself. Keep a supply of plastic bags for waste removal.

– Make a list of several veterinary hospitals  that are easily accessible along your route and at your destination. Have your dog’s medical records and health certificate with you as well.

– Provide your pet with favorite toys, dog chews, dog bed, water and food bowls and any medications your pet takes. Having new toys may help to keep your dog occupied and interested along the way. Use dog treats sparingly as these may cause stomach upset with the motion of the car.

– Feed your dog a few hours before the trip to avoid possible car sickness.

– Have a pet kennel or crate to carry your pet if needed and to have at your destination.

– A window boot or dog safety seat will add to your dog’s comfort and safety should you turn or stop suddenly.

– Ask your vet about motion sickness medications or those that can calm a hyperactive dog.

If you follow these suggestions, you and your dog will have a safe and comfortable trip. Happy motoring!

Pet Carriers for your Bicycle

Does your dog bark happily when you take out his leash? Does your cat meow as you jangle your car keys and say ,”lets go for a ride?” Have you ever wished your pet could accompany you on your daily bike ride?  Bicycle riders can now take their pets for a ride when they pedal their bikes about town, to the park or just in the neighborhood. There are a variety of pet carriers from baskets to bicycle trailers that allow your pet to ride with you.

When deciding upon a carrier, it is important to check the weight and size limits before you purchase one. Basket carriers are usually mounted on bicycle handlebars or crossbars, but some are rear-mounted. The front-mounted basket is generally for dogs (or cats) that weigh between 13 to 15 pounds or less. Those on the rear-mount can fit dogs or cats to approximately 24 pounds (though I haven’t heard of too many 24 pound cats!) The carriers come in many styles from the traditional wicker basket to more sporty, nylon models and colors. They are open at the top or have wire basket covers over them. On the open ones, there are tether straps that connect to the pet’s harness to keep them safe in case the occasional squirrel crosses one’s path.

Bike trailers are becoming very popular for larger pets. They come with a hitch that fits most bikes. There are two wheels on either side that keep them quite steady. They have closed and open tops and mesh windows so your pet can admire the view. They come in various sizes and can accommodate pets up to 110 pounds. Most fold up for easy storage. They are usually padded which is good for bumpier rides and have washable liners.  There are pockets to store essentials like water bottles and waste bags.

Some safety tips to keep in mind are to only use these carriers as they were intended. There are those for bicycles only as well as those for car and walking carrier purposes. When using a bicycle carrier, be sure it is mounted securely. Never leave your pet in the carrier unattended. Check to see that the basket type carrier’s straps do not interfere with your brakes or other levers. The ideal conditions for a ride are on a good weather days and in the daylight.  However, in case it starts to cloud over or if evening comes too soon, reflective strips are essential for good visibility.  Attaching a flag to the back of a pet trailer is also a good idea for all weather conditions.

Take your pet along and enjoy the ride!

What’s on my dog’s mind

Dogs often know what we are going to do before we do it. They are very sensitive to our behavior and emotions. But what about them? We all wish we could tell what our dog is thinking. We know that he seems happy when he wags his tail and licks us. What we need to do is understand more about our dog’s thinking by observing his body language. Here are some indicators of what your dogs body actions may mean:

Whole body movements

pawing – appeasing gesture

play bowing – invitation to play and sign of happiness

freezing in place – frightened

licking another dog’s face – invitation to play or a sign of deference

Mouth and lips

panting – playful, excited, or hot

mouth and lips closed – uncertain or appeasing

licking lips – worried or appeasing

pulled back lips – challenge or warning sign

Hackles

raised – arousal, frightened, challenging another dog

smooth – calm

Tail

relaxed tail – calm, at ease

tail straight out and wagging slowly – cautious, on guard

tail down – worry, uncertainty

tail up and wagging fast – excitement

erect tail – alertness

tail between legs – fear

Ears

relaxed – calm

erect – alert and attentive

up and forward – challenging or assertive

laid back – worried, scared

Eyes

direct contact – bold, confident

averted – deference

dilated pupils – fear

casual – contented

Each dog is an individual and may use many body postures that have earned them rewards from you. My dog will bow when she wants a treat, which I guess is a sign of happiness too! Enjoy your special friend and watch that body language!
